Millionaires, Murals, and Joe Louis: Detroit’s Brodhead Naval Armory
A history of Detroit's Brodhead Armory where Joe Louis fought his first fight and which is adorned with a huge array of Depression Era WPA art.
The Brodhead Group site is comprised of several Veteran centric 501 (c)(3) nonprofits. Including, The Brodhead Association, The Brodhead Armory Preservation Society, and RTB Development. We are also supported by a multitude of other notable organizations in Detroit and around the Nation. (Listed Here)
Our mission is to restore, preserve, and protect our armory, in its entirety, in situ. To educate; be a resource for Veterans and their families; and to be a positive multifaceted benefit to the community, for generations to come.
On Jefferson Avenue just past the Belle Isle Bridge is one of the most unrecognized and unappreciated Art Deco treasures in Detroit. The Brodhead Armory is significant for its architectural design and the fabulous collection of WPA murals within.
The Brodhead Armory was designed in 1930 by the firm of Stratton & Hyde, and William B. Stratton was the principal designer. The structure is a testament to the Modernistic style of the '30s.
Assigned by The Veteran's Task Force, The Brodhead Association, a private non-profit incorporated organization, was established to raise public awareness of the Armory as an historic resource and to raise funds for its preservation.
The purpose is to provide a community destination for education and training to youth and adults, especially Veterans.
Brodhead was home to the 1st Battalion 24th Marines and served as the Marine Corps Mobilization Station.
The Naval Sea Cadet Corps James M Hannan Division, formed in 1964 and comprised of young men and women ages 11 through 17, considered Brodhead home and trained on the training ships and subs. The Navy League Detroit Women Council was founded at Brodhead in 1946.
We welcome your interest and your contributions. Thanks in advance for your contribution to the preservation of this treasure which means so much to our Veterans and our city.
Your contribution will enable us to support our all volunteer efforts and continue operations. We are very grateful for your generosity.
